Lots of beautiful homes, the beaches are gorgeous and it is convenient to getting back over the bridge. Families come for the strolling, museums, and whale-watching; bon vivants for the restaurants, cafes, and entertainment. You won't find any high-rise hotels along the shoreline here. Cape Cod is shaped roughly like the arm of someone flexing a bicep. There were three topographic plates made covering Cape Cod. Provincetown (often called P-town) is on the very tip of Cape Cod, more than 60 miles on Route 6 from the Sagamore Bridge. Chatham has long been known as one of the most desireable locations on Cape Cod and certainly the real estate prices support that opinion. Two bridges, the Sagamore and the Bourne, connect the Cape to mainland Massachusetts.

The numbers of Native Americans predictably waned, in a story of epidemics and territorial loss familiar from other American settlements.

Probably the Capes most famous summer visitors are the Kennedys. Less tony but equally as charming as Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket retains the flavor of a 19th-century New England seaport town.

With all of these influences and attractions, plus whale watching, ferry boats from Boston, and scores of shops, restaurants, and galleries, it’s no mystery why P-town, like the entire Cape, is packed in the summer with families, couples, tourists and students from all over the world. Eastham, as the official gateway to the National Seashore, certainly gets its share of visitors, yet there is also a sleepy quality to this town, which used to have the distinction of being the turnip capital of the country.

Depicted on this map are roads, town buildings, churches, schools, railway lines, shoals and bars. They finally found Provincetown Harbor, anchored, and sent a team to explore the Cape.

The “elbow” is called the Lower Cape and includes the towns of Harwich, Chatham, Orleans, and Brewster. Commercial Street, which leads to the harbor, has art galleries filled with work inspired by local artists. It is divided into four regions: from west to east, or from the “shoulder” to the “hand”: the Upper Cape, the Mid Cape, the Lower Cape and the Outer Cape. The 17-mile long Cape Cod Canal was finished in 1914 (and is still the widest sea-level canal in the world); in the 1930s, the Sagamore and Bourne bridges were built over the Canal, opening up the Cape to automobiles that have increased in number every summer since. Route 6A, also known as the Old Kings Highway, runs parallel to Route 6 along the Upper and Mid Cape, but is closer to the shore.

The Mid Cape has some of the nicest towns on Cape Cod. It takes about an hour to drive to the edge of Cape Cod from Boston, and longer if you're traveling during a busy summer weekend. The Cape exploded in popularity and livability in the last half of the 20th century, and everywhere there are signs of the Capes struggle to find a happy medium between commercialism and its quaint New England roots. Outer Cape If you're looking for quaint towns and an incredibly scenic drive, Route 6A (also known as "Old Kings Highway") is a wonderful road to travel.

Google's satellite-view maps are great tools for exploring Cape Cod from home, from the office, or wherever you happen to have online access and a decent sized screen to see them on. Interactive map of Cape Cod shore fishing spots, kayak spots, ramps, tackle shops available.

This is a limited-access road with two travel lanes in each direction, until you reach Exit 9 in Harwich where it drops to one lane in each direction. Glaciers are also responsible for the deep ponds that dot the Cape. Its 15 yesteryear towns seem to have been plucked from a Norman Rockwell painting, while the Cape Cod National Seashore has ensured that little development is allowed on almost 30 miles of its Atlantic coast beaches. The main drag (so to speak) is Commercial Street, with the best shopping on Cape Cod. Here you will find ocean beaches that are on par with those in Hawaii and Florida offering some of the best waves, swimming, and sun available on the Atlantic coastline. Some of Cape Cod's finest swimming holes and most spectacular beaches line the coast of Wellfleet.
